NNPCL counters NISO over claim of limited gas amid poor electricity supply

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) says its gas transportation network is operating without constraints amid the recent drop in electricity generation.
This comes after the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) cited limited gas availability and lower water inflows at hydroelectric stations.
In a Friday statement signed by its spokesperson, Andy Odeh, NNPCL said the network operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), remained available to transport gas to power stations nationwide.
NISO, in a Thursday statement, said limited gas constrained some thermal plants, while reduced water inflows affected hydroelectric output.
The NNPC’s statement addressed the operating condition of NGIC’s transportation network. It also says gas production, commercial supply arrangements and actual deliveries to individual power plants need to be assessed separately.
NNPC calls for a wider review
NNPC said gas production volumes had risen by about 10 per cent year to date in 2026, which it linked to the Federal Government’s gas development and monetisation agenda. Although it did not provide production volumes or details of how much gas was delivered to power stations.
The company said a full assessment of the generation shortfall should also examine whether generating units were operational, plant maintenance schedules and actual gas offtake.
It called for gas suppliers, transporters, power generators and NISO to review operational data together.
NNPC said the review would help determine whether constraints arose in production, supply agreements, delivery to individual plants or the plants’ ability to convert gas into electricity.
NISO says consumers receiving less power
NISO said the lower available generation had reduced the electricity allocated to distribution companies, leading to shorter supply hours and increased load shedding across their networks.
It said the impact varied by distribution company according to available generation and allocations.
As electricity supply worsened across the country, NISO data showed that the 11 distribution companies received a combined allocation of 2,926 megawatts at 4:41 p.m. on Thursday.
Power Minister Joseph Tegbe attributed outages in parts of the country to planned maintenance at Egbin Power Station, gas supply constraints at some thermal plants and damage to key transmission lines, which he said restricted alternative supply routes, particularly to Lagos.
“My team and I are working to return the affected generating units to service in phases, with the first units coming back online within the next 48 to 72 hours,” he posted on X.
