Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai has announced her marriage on Tuesday, sharing pictures of the intimate ceremony at her Birmingham home.

“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families.

“Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead,” Ms Yousafzai tweeted on Tuesday and shared photos of the ceremony.

Ms Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for girls’ education, becoming in 2014, the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate at age 17.

In 2012, Ms Yousafzai gained global recognition when she was shot in the head by the Taliban in Pakistan while advocating for the right of education for girls.

She was shot in the left side of her face by a bullet that travelled through her neck and into her shoulder.

After this incident, she and her family went to the United Kingdom to receive treatment.

When Ms Yousafzai was 16 years old, she delivered a speech at the United Nations headquarters on the importance of gender equality in education.

She continues to advocate for human rights and is the co-founder of the Malala Fund, which strives to help girls all over the world receive 12 years of quality education.

After the Taliban recaptured Afghanistan in August, Ms Yousafzai wrote an opinion for the New York Times, discussing her experience with the extremist group.
