Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Adamawa has trained no fewer than 900 personnel under its Safe School Initiative to protect schools from attacks.

Ibrahim Mainasara, NSCDC’s commander in the state, disclosed this in commemoration of 2023 International Day to protect education against attack organised by education in emergency working group and Adamawa government in Yola on Saturday.

Mr Mainasara, who was represented by the command’s public relations officer, Dimas Billed, said that the corps is doing everything possible to guarantee a secured learning environment from the national down to the states.

According to him, 400 personnel were recently trained in Borno and another 500 currently undergoing training in Benue.

“NSCDC is the lead agency in the National Safe School Project and work in collaboration with other sister agencies inclusion of host communities,” he said.

Mr Mainasara said the Rapid Response Squad is ever ready to ensure that schools are protected in the state.

In his remarks, Garba Pella, Commissioner, ministry of education, said attack on education is a violation of human rights and a direct assault on the potential of future generations.

Mr Pella, who was represented by deputy director basic education, Samuel Bello, said whenever schools are bombed, teachers are threatened and students are denied the opportunity to learn.

“The International Day to Protect Education from Attack is a call to action, a call to solidarity, and a call to commitment,” he said.

The commissioner urged stakeholders to redouble their efforts in ensuring that educational institutions are sanctuaries of learning, free from harm and fear.

“Together, we can turn the tide against the attacks on education and ensure that it remains a beacon of hope and progress for generations to come,” he said.

Hajiya Fatima Belel, executive director, Fabel Foundation for Youth and Women, called on government to prioritise welfare of teachers, provide safe and hygienic places for girls to clean themselves when in menstruation.
