NUC upgrades Shehu Shagari College of Education to university

NUC has upgraded the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, to the Shehu Shagari University of Education.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has upgraded the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, to the Shehu Shagari University of Education.

This makes it the first university of education in the northern region.

NUC executive secretary Rasheed Abubakar at the presentation of a recognition letter for the university in Abuja on Monday, said the institution would be the 58th state university in Nigeria.

“Upon your letter on March 4, I write on behalf of NUC with effect from Monday, March 21, 2022, to make the Shehu Shagari University of Education recognised as the 58th state university and 206th university in the country,” said the NUC boss. “This university is the first university of education in the entire northern states and number four in the country.”

It explained that the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ogun as the first, Delta State University of Education, Lagos State University of Education and now the Shehu Shagari University of Education.

Mr Abubakar said NUC would notify JAMB, TETFund and NYSC about the upgrade to establish the new university.

He, therefore, congratulated Governor Aminu Tambuwal and the people of Sokoto on the new university.

Responding, Mr Tambuwal expressed gratitude to the NUC and assured that it would abide by the rules and regulations governing the running of public universities as prescribed by the commission.
