Segun Odegbami, a former captain of Nigeria’s Green Eagles, has urged greater inclusion of retired footballers in the administration of Nigerian football.

Odegbami spoke at a ceremony conferring a chieftaincy title on Imo-born businessman and philanthropist, Success Akagburuonye, during his 60th birthday celebrations in Aboh Mbaise on Friday.

The 73-year-old hero of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations said the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and related bodies should prioritise retired players with valuable on-field experience.

Odegbami, nicknamed “Mathematical” for his precise style, said experienced footballers could offer “practical insights” required to revive Nigeria’s struggling national teams.

According to him, players from Nigeria’s first proper footballing decade could transform the sport’s fortunes if entrusted with administrative responsibilities.

“The first proper decade of Nigerian football went through fire and brimstone, with a paucity of facilities and numerous challenges.

“Today, the story is different, with academies and improved facilities. Our football now begs for first-hand experience, hence the need to bring in former players,” he said.

Responding, Mr Akagburuonye thanked God for the chieftaincy title, ‘Akara Ugo Ndigbo’ (The People’s Mark of Honour), bestowed by traditional rulers from across Igboland.

“The greatest honour goes to God who honoured me with great privileges, and God will honour all who honoured me.

“Good things will follow you and God will fulfil your heart’s desires.

“This honour I dedicate to God and I call for His blessings upon you in the morning, afternoon and night,” he said.

The activities include a novelty match featuring at least 15 former Nigeria internationals on Saturday and a church thanksgiving service on Sunday.
