The police command in Ogun has intensified enforcement against illegal number plates, misuse of dealer plates, and unauthorised sirens and amber lights statewide.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abeokuta.

Mr Babaseyi said the enforcement was aimed at safeguarding lives, preventing crime, and enhancing public safety across Ogun.

“Acting on credible intelligence, we have commenced intelligence-led checks on vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, invalid, or improperly affixed number plates,” he said.

He added that vehicles unlawfully using dealer plates would also be checked, noting that such plates are often exploited for criminal activities.

“Offenders are being identified, arrested, and prosecuted in line with extant laws,” Mr Babaseyi stated, adding that the operation promotes road safety.

He said specialised units, including the Motor Traffic Department, Monitoring Unit, and X-Squad, have been deployed to ensure professional and lawful enforcement.

Mr Babaseyi added that area commanders and divisional police officers would supervise operations to guarantee fairness, transparency, and adherence to guidelines.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, urged residents to cooperate with officers and comply with traffic and safety regulations.

Mr Ogunlowo advised the public to avoid suspicious vehicles and use only recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points.

He assured that the exercise targets crime prevention, public order, and protection of lives, while respecting the rights and dignity of road users.

The police urged residents to report suspicious activities through Gateway Shield on 0800 000 9111 or other emergency numbers provided by the command.
