Ondo speaker urges sustained commitment to deepen democratic ideals

The speaker urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and promoting national unity.
The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, has called for sustained commitment to democratic ideals as Nigeria celebrates 27 uninterrupted years of civilian rule.
Mr Oladiji, in a statement on Friday in Akure, urged Nigerians to uphold democratic principles to justify the significance of the celebration.
He described June 12 as a symbol of the unwavering will of the Nigerian people, their quest for justice and the enduring hope for a truly democratic society.
He stated, “Today, we celebrate not only the resilience of our democratic institutions, but also the courage of Nigerians who have continued to defend the values of freedom, equity and good governance. We are equally reflecting on our democratic journey and honouring the memory of our past heroes.”
The speaker urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and promoting national unity.
According to him, June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s political history, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for the nation’s democratic freedom.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to national unity, economic revitalisation and good governance, and prayed for continued progress and harmony in the country.
He also expressed appreciation to those who fought for a free and fair democratic process, especially the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election became a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The speaker further commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for fostering growth and development in Ondo State.
