Ondo varsity denies political, ethnic bias in sacking 30 staff

The authority of the Ondo government-owned Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), in Okitipupa, has said the sacking of over 30 workers of the institution did not have any political or ethnic undertone.
“Management also wishes to inform the general public that the disengagement has no ethnic, political or religious colouration,” the University in a statement released by the Acting Registrar, Idowu Omowole, on Thursday partly read.
On Wednesday, aggrieved workers of the University allegedly sacked by the Governing Council of the institution, paralysed academic activities on campus in protest.
The protestors accused the governing council of the institution led by Professor Akinbo Adesomoju of disengaging them from work, leading to the shutting down of the University’s main gate.
Led by their union leaders; the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the workers claimed that they were duly employed by the University and issued appointment letters, stressing that they were surprised when they got the sack letters on Tuesday.
But in the copy of the University’s statement obtained by Peoples Gazette on Thursday, Mr Omowole said governing council of the university was looking into the sacking of the workers.
“The Management of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, Ondo State wishes to assure staff, students and the general public that the current disengagement of staff by the Governing Council of the University is being addressed.
“Management hereby reiterates to all stakeholders its unalloyed commitment to the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology’s mandate of excellent teaching, cutting-edge research and strategic community engagement,” he added.
