OndoDecides: Police vow to prosecute electoral offenders
Inspector-General Muhammed Adamu on Wednesday said the police will prosecute anyone caught fomenting violence during the upcoming elections in Ondo.
About 17 political parties would participate in the exercise on October 10.
“Specifically, the IGP warns that the full weight of the law will be meted out to anyone, no matter their status in society, who engages in any electoral fraud such as political violence, vote buying, ballot box snatching, hate speeches and all other unwholesome practices capable of undermining the peace and stability of the electoral process,” Mr. Adamu said according to a statement by chief police spokesman Frank Mba.
Mr. Adamu said police officers and other law enforcement agents deployed for the election strictly adhere to the electoral acts and other extant laws guiding their conducts.
Mr. Adamu also gave the security personnel a stern warning on misconduct and promised to deal with officers found wanting.
“He warns that Police Officers and officers of other law enforcement agencies found acting contrary to their oaths of office or in aid of illicit electoral practices will be strictly and personally held liable with dire legal consequences.” he said.
The two major contenders of Saturday’s election are APC’ Rotimi Akeredolu and PDP’s Eyitayo Jegede.
