Orile-Agege chairman urges residents’ participation in monthly sanitation

Akinola Idowu, the chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State, has urged residents to participate in the monthly sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday.
Mr Idowu made the appeal in a statement issued on Thursday by his chief press secretary (CPS), Sunday Adefamoye.
He said the exercise would hold from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., with residents expected to participate actively across the council area.
According to him, the exercise will include clearing blocked drains, removing refuse and cleaning residential compounds.
The chairman said the exercise aimed to reduce the spread of diseases and improve environmental hygiene.
He said the council had partnered with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and private sector participants (PSP) to ensure effective waste collection and disposal.
Mr Idowu said two compactors had been deployed to support refuse evacuation, adding that the machines would improve efficiency and promote sustainable waste management practices.
“Residents are urged to participate fully, as sanitation is everyone’s responsibility.
“Collective action ensures cleaner surroundings and healthier families,” he said.
He added that the exercise was expected to instill civic responsibility among residents and encourage them to embrace cleanliness as a daily habit rather than a one-off exercise.
Mr Idowu noted that regular sanitation remained essential in urban communities to prevent flooding and disease outbreaks and to promote healthier living conditions.
He said the initiative aligned with the Lagos State government’s drive for cleaner communities and reinforced the shared responsibility of maintaining public health and environmental sanitation.
