Oyo assembly demands action on misinformation, social media abuse

The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to collaborate with relevant communication agencies and proactively curb the spread of misinformation.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Waheed Akintayo (APM-Oluyole) at the plenary in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The motion is titled “Need for the Executive Arm of Government Through Relevant Communication Agencies to Take Necessary Steps to Curb the Spread of Misinformation and Falsehood on Social Media Ahead of the Electioneering Period.”
Mr Akintayo expressed concern over the growing circulation of unverified information across social media platforms, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the increasing prevalence of fake news has continued to generate panic, anxiety, and distrust among citizens, posing threats to public confidence in institutions and the overall stability of society.
He called on the state government to address the menace by working with relevant communication agencies and engaging critical stakeholders to promote responsible social media use before it escalates.
The motion was seconded by Babajide Adebayo (APM-Ibadan North II).
In his submission, Mr Adebayo condemned what he described as reckless and irresponsible use of social media by self-acclaimed political influencers, public commentators and other social media personalities.
He appealed to the state government to collaborate with relevant government agencies to curb the trend.
Olusola Owolabi (APM-Ibadan North-East II) stressed the need for greater public awareness and coordinated efforts to discourage the dissemination of false information that could mislead citizens and undermine public peace.
In his remarks, the speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, clarified that the motion’s intention was not to suppress freedom of expression or limit citizens’ rights to express their views.
He said that the assembly was primarily concerned about the abuse of social media platforms through the deliberate spread of falsehood and misleading information.
Mr Ogundoyin commended the sponsors of the motion and described it as timely and relevant, especially in an era when information plays a critical role in shaping public opinion and decision-making.
“At a time when information is power, it is important for citizens to use social media responsibly,” he said.
He, however, emphasised the need for users to verify information before sharing it with others.
Following deliberations, the speaker put the motion to a voice vote, and the House unanimously adopted it.
Before adjournment, Mr Ogundoyin hinted that the assembly may commence its annual recess within the next one or two weeks.
He, therefore, urged lawmakers to expedite action on all pending legislative assignments and ensure that reports on outstanding committee work are submitted before the commencement of the recess.
The House subsequently adjourned plenary until June 30.
