Oyo: Police alert residents to rising cases of drowning, issue safety advisory

The police command in Oyo has issued a safety advisory over rising cases of drowning.
In a public safety advisory issued on Wednesday, its spokesman, Ayanlade Olayinka, urged religious places, hotels, recreational centres, and private homes to provide safety nets for any body of water.
“The Oyo state police command wishes to alert members of the public to a recent increase in incidents of drowning across the state. Members of the public are therefore urged to exercise extreme caution around rivers, streams, dams, swimming pools, and other water-related facilities,” the statement said.
The police urged owners of hotels, resorts, and recreational centres in the state to employ trained lifeguards, instructors, and swimming tutors, who would ensure that rescue and safety equipment are readily available and functional at all times.
The command called on parents, homeowners, and guardians to be vigilant about children’s safety, cautioning against minors visiting rivers or wells or engaging in swimming activities without responsible adult supervision.
“Owners and occupants of houses with wells are advised to ensure that all wells are properly covered and securely lidded at all times. Where corrosion, damage, or structural defects are noticed on well covers or protective structures, such defects must be addressed immediately to prevent accidents,” the command said.
It added, “In households with wells, elders and responsible adults must ensure that access to the well area is restricted and securely locked when not in use by an adult.”
