Oyo police nab suspected armed robbers, recover toy pistols
The Oyo State police command, on Saturday, said it arrested two suspects responsible for robbing unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables, along Elebu-Oja, off Alao-Akala Expressway, Ibadan.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, the command said it achieved the feat following a credible tip-off from vigilant citizens who reported the activities of the hoodlums.
“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the public of a successful operation following credible intelligence received from vigilant citizens regarding the activities of hoodlums who allegedly rob unsuspecting members of the public along Elebu-Oja, off Alao-Akala Expressway, Ibadan,” the statement said.
“Acting promptly on the information, operatives of the Command’s Anti-Counterfeiting and Fraud Unit embarked on a targeted surveillance patrol in the area to apprehend the suspects and prevent further criminality,” it said.
The command said its operatives found two toy pistols and some illicit drugs on the suspects as exhibits.
“A search conducted on their person and belongings led to the recovery of two (2) toy pistols and some illicit drugs, which were immediately secured as exhibits for investigation. The swift response of the operatives prevented potential escalation of criminal activity and safeguarded the community,” Mr Olayinka said.
Mr Olayinka stated that the suspects confessed to being involved in series of robberies in several parts of the state and instilling fear in many communities.
“These individuals, who operate across state lines, have reportedly caused significant havoc in many communities, dispossessing victims of their valuables and instilling fear among residents. Their arrest represents a critical step towards disrupting this criminal network and restoring public confidence in the safety of the area,” the spokesman noted.
The spokesman noted that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, directed that the suspects be charged to court in accordance with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and properties, the command urged residents in the state to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities, and continue to provide actionable intelligence that will aid policing in the state.
