Oyo restates commitment to responsible forestry practices

The Oyo State government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible forestry practices as part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable resource management in the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, stated this on Wednesday while receiving the Oyo State Sawmillers and Timber Contractors Association at the Ministry.
Mr Aderinto emphasised the need to strengthen compliance with environmental and sustainable forestry practices through collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
He said that tree planting remains a core priority of the ministry, stressing that environmental stewardship, particularly afforestation, was critical to maintaining ecological balance and supporting the state’s long-term development agenda.
According to the commissioner, true development extends beyond infrastructure to include the preservation and regeneration of natural resources for future generations.
He decried the indiscriminate felling of trees, especially the harvesting of immature timber, describing it as harmful to both the environment and public safety.
Mr Aderinto said that the use of such timber in construction could compromise structural integrity and endanger lives.
He urged members of the association to uphold professionalism, unity, and strict adherence to environmental guidelines.
He also warned that the actions of a few individuals must not tarnish the reputation of the entire body.
The commissioner called for stronger cooperation with the ministry in promoting sustainable forestry practices across the state.
In his remarks at the occasion, the president of the association, Kabiru Olajide, assured the commissioner of the association’s continued compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
Mr Olajide sought government support in improving the preservation of forest reserves and assured the association’s readiness to partner with the government in the production of tree seedlings for afforestation and sustainability initiatives.
He said that such a move would significantly contribute to rebuilding depleted forest resources and enhancing environmental resilience across the state.
