Pat Utomi urges youth participation in democracy

A political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has called for renewed efforts to instil democratic values in young Nigerians, saying civic education is critical to sustaining democracy and national development.
Mr Utomi, a professor at Lagos Business School (LBS), made the call in an interview on Sunday while discussing the role of youth in strengthening democratic governance.
According to him, every generation has a responsibility to prepare younger members of society to build on the achievements of previous generations and create a better future.
He said that democracy, when properly practised, offers opportunities for progress and ensures that the will of the people guides the affairs of society.
“Although our democratic practice is far from perfect, we must continue to improve it and ensure that democratic ideals are embedded in the mindset of young people,” he said.
Mr Utomi stated that civic education programmes should be strengthened in schools and communities to teach young people about democracy, leadership and the rule of law.
He noted that youth organisations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Man O’ War had historically played important roles in promoting leadership, discipline and civic responsibility among young people.
The professor warned that failing to promote democratic values among youths could lead to increased state capture and the emergence of authoritarian tendencies in society.
Drawing lessons from history, he said, societies that neglect democratic engagement risk creating conditions that undermine freedom, inclusion and good governance.
Mr Utomi also urged faith-based organisations and educational institutions to develop programmes that encourage democratic participation and foster a culture of inclusion.
He described democracy as “a civilisation of inclusion” where every citizen has a voice and an opportunity to contribute to national development.
Speaking on the growing perception among some youths that politics is mainly a pathway to personal enrichment, Mr Utomi said such a mindset was dangerous and unsustainable.
According to him, leaders who pursue personal gain at the expense of the public good create resentment and social instability that could ultimately threaten national peace and development.
He argued that stable societies are built when leaders and citizens work toward the common good and ensure that institutions promote justice, fairness and equal opportunities.
Mr Utomi urged young Nigerians to embrace selflessness and service, noting that genuine progress requires sacrifice and commitment to the welfare of others.
“The future belongs to people who are willing to sacrifice a little of themselves for the common good. When we have leaders with that spirit, society will be more stable and prosperous,” he said.
