PDP reconciliatory committee visits Makinde, harps on unity

The national reconciliatory committee set up by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday visited Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo state in Ibadan.

The committee, chaired by the former governor of Osun state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has the mandate to address the internal wranglings in the party.

Mr Makinde, who was represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, while receiving the team, described the task ahead of the committee members as an arduous one.

He noted that the outcome of the committee’s assignment would determine the future of PDP in Nigeria, “either to progress from the current quagmire, remain stagnated, or retrogress”.

The governor charged the committee to take the bull by the horn and ensure that issues affecting the party fundamentally are duly addressed and resolved.

He said that this would put the party in a better position for future elections.

Mr Makinde urged all party stakeholders to put aside their differences and cooperate with the reconciliatory committee to strengthen the party’s position in the country.

Earlier, Mr Oyinlola said the committee was aiming to find a lasting solution to the challenges being faced by the party through dialogue and negotiation.

He said this would give every stakeholder a sense of inclusivity.

The chairman, while emphasising the importance of unity of purpose within the PDP, cautioned against the inherent danger in going into any election with a divided house.

He attributed the internal rifts within the PDP to various factors, including disputes over personal political interests, aspirations, and party supremacy among others.

He said the committee was composed of highly respected politicians with track records and vast political experiences.

Mr Oyinlola said they were determined to carry out the assignment effectively.

Among the committee members present were former governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Dankwambo, who is the national secretary of committee, and PDP BoT member, Mutiat Ladoja.

They also include former minister of state for Federal Capital Territory; Jumoke Akinjide, Segun Sowunmi, and Dr Eddy Olafeso.
