Spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has labelled a former Anambra State governor and Labour Party chieftain, Peter Obi, a liar who does not keep to his words.

In a post on X on Sunday, Mr Onanuga responded to Mr Obi’s statement that he would serve only a term if elected president in 2027.

Mr Onanuga recalled how Mr Obi dumped his former party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, after vowing not to do so.

He said, “You talk about keeping your promises or your vow being your bond, but you and I know that’s not true. You have broken previous promises and usually lie with reckless abandon, sometimes needlessly.

“For example, you said you won’t leave APGA, but you left (the reason for your exit is immaterial because if we’re to make allowance for excuses, you’ll definitely have an excuse to break your one-term vow). You talk about trust, but how do you expect people to trust someone who can’t keep a simple promise not to leave a political party?”

Mr Onanuga stated that Mr Obi sounded as if he never held an elected office before, adding that he sought re-election as Anambra State governor in 2010, and narrowly won courtesy of a divided opposition.

“Why didn’t you walk away after only one term in office?,” Mr Onanuga stated.

The presidential aide dismissed Mr Obi’s promise to dedicate himself to transforming Nigeria from a consuming nation into a productive one, adding “Meanwhile after serving two terms, did Anambra look like a state that has been transformed?”

He added “If you couldn’t transform a small Anambra State after eight years, is there a guarantee that you’ll do anything significant under four years as president of a complex and complicated Nigeria?”

In a statement on X on Sunday, following Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo’s speech that any politician promising to serve a single term needed psychiatric evaluation, Mr Obi reiterated his pledge to serve a single term if elected president in 2027.
