Peter Obi’s supporter squandered Obidient Movement’s campaign funds on bet in Edo

Morris Monye, Obidient Movement’s director of mobilisation, has revealed that a member of Peter Obi’s Obidient Movement in Edo State squandered N1 million campaign funds kept in his trust on betting.
Mr Monye made this revelation in a post on X on Thursday, explaining that the movement kept N1 million campaign funds with the member because the group had no bank account.
“We raised almost 1m naira for mobilisation in Edo state which the Obidient leadership gave to one of the members to help hold for the Edo state Obidient chapter as there is no official account,” Mr Monye said.
He further said that when it was “time to use money for activities, the person could not bring out money. He had one excuse or the other. I was so disappointed. Like over how much?”
He added that the Obidient Movement “involved police and he confesses that he used the money for betting. (Chelsea vs PSG precisely).”
According to Mr Monye, after the unnamed member was forced to refund all the money, he joined the ruling APC in his ward, Oredo LGA Ward 7.
Mr Obi, a former governor of Anambra, garnered huge support and funding from young Nigerians during the 2023 presidential election.
After the 2023 election, however, accusations and counter-accusations of fund embezzlement have rocked Mr Obi’s team, as members of a faction of his Labour Party and the Obidient Movement continue to trade blame.
