On Wednesday, a 47-year-old man, Sunday Aweta, appeared before a magistrates’ court in Ikorodu, Lagos, for stealing pumpkin leaves (ugwu) and assault.

Mr Aweta is facing a three-count charge bordering on stealing, assault and unlawful use of a dangerous weapon.

The prosecutor, Insp Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 10 at about 9:00 a.m. at Oreyo in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

Mr Okonofua alleged that the defendant stole pumpkin leaves, valued at N500, belonging to the complainant, Chiwendu Uche.

He said the defendant allegedly assaulted the complainant and another woman, Oluchi Enyiko, by hitting them with a cutlass without provocation.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant unlawfully cut Ms Enyiko’s right four fingers with the cutlass, causing her bodily harm.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 287, 170 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, T.A. Shotobi, granted the defendant N50,000 bail with two sureties.

She adjourned the case until June 22 for mention.
