Police detain journalist over alleged cyber bullying, blackmail of Agege LG chairman

Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon, Lagos, on Wednesday apprehended a Lagos-based journalist, Adegbenro Adenekan.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer at FCID Alagbon, ASP Aminat Mayegun, said the incident was based on allegations of cyberstalking, bullying and blackmail targeting the chairman of Agege local government, Ganiyu Egunjlobi.
Ms Mayegun explained that the arrest followed a petition by T.C. Eze Chambers on behalf of Mr Egunjobi to the AIG, FCID Annex, on June 2, accusing Mr Adegbenro and some other unidentified individuals of cyberstalking, bullying, scandalous publications, threats to life, incitement of the public, and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.
Ms Mayegun stated, “A detailed written petition was submitted to the AIG, FCID Annex, on June 2,2025 by T.C. Eze Chambers, acting on behalf of Chief Ganiu Kola Egunjobi. The petition concerns a case involving cyberstalking, bullying, scandalous publications, threats to life, incitement of the public, and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.
“The allegations are made against Mr Adegbenro Nurudeen and other unidentified individuals, who are said to be using various Facebook and Instagram accounts —as well as those operated by their proxies-to malign, scandalize, threaten, and bully Egunjobi.
“It is further stated in the petition that the cyberstalking began after Mr Adegbenro allegedly approached Chief Egunjobi, seeking an appointment as his media assistant, which the chief declined. Following the escalation of these incidents, the matter was referred to the Public Relations Office, and Mr Adegbenro was subsequently invited for questioning.”
Meanwhile, Ms Mayegun noted that investigations were ongoing concerning the case and to identify other individuals connected with the alleged cyberstalking and blackmail.
