The police command in Benue on Thursday inaugurated a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to curb rising cases of violence in the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Udeme Edet, made the disclosure in a statement in Makurdi.

Ms Edet said the launch of the unit was in line with ongoing reforms initiated by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

She explained that the reorganisation of the police tactical structure, including the establishment of the VCRU, was aimed at strengthening operational efficiency across the state.

According to her, the state Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, described the initiative as a strategic step toward improving coordination in tackling violent crimes and other emerging security threats.

She added that the restructuring was designed to eliminate operational overlaps, ensure accountability, and promote a more disciplined and intelligence-driven policing system.

Mr Emenari noted that the newly constituted unit would serve as a centralised response arm for critical incidents, enabling swift deployment and more efficient resource management.

He stressed that professionalism and respect for fundamental human rights remained non-negotiable standards for operatives deployed under the unit.

He said, “As part of the rollout, selected officers have commenced an intensive training programme focused on modern policing techniques, ethical conduct, and tactical response.

“The training is expected to enhance their readiness to respond effectively to security challenges within the state.”

The command reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and called on the public to continue providing credible information and support to the police to ensure a safer Benue State.
