Police laud Enugu residents for shunning nationwide hunger protests
The police command in Enugu state has lauded residents of the state for maintaining calm and not indulging in the nationwide hunger protests.
The spokesman of the command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made the commendation while speaking with journalists in Enugu on Thursday on the impact of the protest in the state.
According to Mr Ndukwe, Enugu state is calm and very peaceful today.
“The police have witnessed commendable cooperation from the residents of the state within all nooks and crannies today.
“We are appealing that this cooperation continues.
“The Command wants all residents to go about their legitimate businesses as police operatives and sister security agencies are ready to ensure safety of lives and property in the state,” Mr Ndukwe said.
The police spokesman said that the police operatives were on ground in every inch of the state, adding that the command had not received any untoward or negative report from any quarter or person in the state.
Residents of Enugu metropolis had shunned the national hunger protest as major roads and streets remained calm.
Most residents had remained indoors while many malls and shops in the coal city were under lock and key, as well as a few vehicular movements.
A trader in Mayor market along Agbani Road, Obi Asika, who opened his shop, said: “I have monitored the situation, which I noticed is calm, and that is why I opened my shop for my daily business.”
A commercial tricycle operator, Ndu Maduka, said that he was operating within the vicinity of where he lived for now and would continue to monitor the situation.
It would be recalled that the organisers of the national hunger protest have billed the protest to last between Aug. 1 and Aug. 10.
