The police commissioner in Anambra, Nnanna Ama, has ordered a manhunt for the killers of two residents in separate attacks in Awka.

The command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the directive in a statement on Monday.

According to Mr Ikenga, the command condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in the capital city on Sunday, which resulted in the death of two persons.

“The command has consequently intensified the ongoing manhunt for the perpetrators and is calling for the support and cooperation of members of the public to assist in bringing the suspects to justice,” he stated.

He noted that information gathered so far revealed that three persons, travelling in a silver Toyota Corolla, reportedly shot the victims at separate locations within Awka.

He said that upon receiving the distress information, the command’s operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and began efforts to track down the assailants.

“Upon arrival at the scenes, the operatives recovered the bodies of the victims on Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel,” he added.

The police commissioner explained that one of the victims was identified as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Azia, while the command is making efforts to identify the second victim.

He further explained that the operatives also recovered ₦7,550, one Moniepoint automated teller machine card and a pair of slippers from the scene.

Mr Ama condemned the killing, calling it unacceptable and a direct affront to peace and security in the state. He further directed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.

He also directed the security operatives to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining towns and communities.

The command called on community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners, and other members of the public who witnessed the incidents or have credible information about the suspects, their movements, or the vehicle used in the attacks to come forward and assist the police.

He gave assurance that such information “will be treated with utmost confidentiality”.

The command reiterated that community partnership is critical to effective policing and urged residents not to hesitate to provide timely, credible information that would help apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
