Police in Osun State said they arrested about 100 thugs from Ekiti and Ondo states who came to Osun to disrupt the ongoing governorship election.

The police commissioner in charge of the Osun governorship election, Erale Etaifo, made the disclosure on Saturday.

“We have about 100 people in custody who came from neighbouring states of Ondo and Ekiti to disrupt this election for the past one month,” Mr Etaifo stated.

The police, however, noted that no arrest was made relating to electoral violence in the ongoing poll.

The development came amid reports of violence and vote-buying in different locations in the state.

Earlier, the police arrested a member of the House of Assembly, representing Irewole-Isokan Constituency, Abiola Inaolaji Ibrahim, of the ruling Accord Party, in possession of over 100 permanent voter cards.

The state police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the PVCs found with Mr Ibrahim allegedly belonged to 143 alleged mercenaries discovered camped in the house of his late father, Raji Ibrahim, during the ongoing governorship election.

“The true situation of the matter is that the House of Assembly member was arrested with about 143 persons suspected to be mercenaries to be used for this electioneering process,” Mr Abiodun stated.
