President Mahama suspends Ghana’s chief justice Torkornoo over corruption

Ghana’s President John Mahama has suspended the country’s chief justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, following serious allegations of legal misconduct and corruption.
Ms Torkornoo’s suspension was announced in a statement released on Tuesday by presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, following a formal petition filed against her by three individuals.
“In consultation with the Council of State, it was determined that a prima facie case has been established and that Torkornoo would be suspended while she is investigated,” the statement said.
Ms Torkornoo, who became Ghana’s 15th chief justice and the third woman to hold the post following her appointment in June 2023, was accused of tampering with court records and misappropriation of public funds.
Mr Mahama has also established a five-member committee, including Gabriel Pwamang, a supreme court justice and former auditor-general, Daniel Domelevo, to investigate the allegations against Ms Torkornoo.
Meanwhile, Ms Torkornoo has been given 10 days to appear before the investigative panel, becoming the first sitting chief justice to face formal investigation through a constitutional process.
