The first lady, Remi Tinubu, has reacted to the query issued to a student of Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Osato Edobor, by the management over her involvement in a trending video in which student nurses ridiculed Mrs Tinubu.

A copy of Ms Edobor’s query, signed by Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, the provost, went viral on Friday.

According to a statement released on Friday by Busola Kukoyi, media aide to Mrs Tinubu, she attributed the students actions to their enthusiasm and being overwhelmed in the moment.

Mrs Tinubu said recognised the value of discipline in institutions but also stressed that it’s crucial to take into account the circumstances surrounding students’ actions. She encouraged institutions to create a balance between discipline and understanding students’ behaviour as they express themselves.

She expressed gratitude for the heartfelt welcome she received from the Delta State government, its people, and the enthusiastic support from nurses, midwives, women’s groups, and student nurses who attended the event.

The first lady called on the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to address the issue in a balanced manner, taking into account the reasons for the students’ behaviour.

“The event was primarily to motivate midwives across the nation, with the aim of reducing infant and maternal mortality, and morbidity in Nigeria.  Her Excellency deeply appreciates the warm reception by the Delta State Government, the people of Delta State, as well as enthusiasm shown by nurses, midwives, women groups, and student nurses present at the event.”

“However, a section of the video, allegedly recorded by some students at the event, showed a spontaneous and playful twist to the welcome song. Sequel to that, it has come to our attention that some of the students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences have been issued a query regarding their participation in the chants. While the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria respects the right of institutions to uphold discipline, it is important to recognise that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a light-hearted and jovial manner. “

“We trust that the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences will handle this matter with understanding and fairness, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that balances discipline with free expression,” the statement said.
