Reps postpone security summit to honour late army chief, others
The House of Representatives has postponed its national security summit in honour of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru, and ten other military officers that died in an air crash on Friday.
The summit which was scheduled to hold from Monday, May 24, will now kick off on Wednesday, May 26, according to a statement signed by Chinedu Francis Akubueze, the Clerk of the House of Representatives.
“It should be noted that the postponement became necessary as the late army chief was one of the major stakeholders that would have taken part in the summit,” he noted.
Peoples Gazette had earlier reported that Ibrahim Attahiru, who was appointed chief of army staff on January 26, succeeding Tukur Buratai, died at 54 in a plane crash in Kaduna, alongside other military officers who were on the same flight.
President Muhammadu Buhari failed to attend funeral rites of the fallen heroes, just a few kilometres away from his official abode.
The plane was the third military jet operated by the Nigerian Air Force to crash this year.
Mr Buhari has promised that an investigation would be conducted to establish the causes of the accidents.
