The speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has pledged the National Assembly’s commitment to eradicating violence against women in the country.

Mr Abbas made the pledge while addressing activists on a walk to mark the commencement of “16 days of activism against gender-based violence” on Monday in Abuja.

He said the celebration had come when women were angry and frustrated following the United Nation’s report, which stated that “every 10 minutes, a woman is being killed across the world.”

Mr Abbas said the parliament must work, more than ever before, with relevant authorities, particularly the law enforcement agencies, to ensure that the dangerous trend was nipped in the bud.

“I want to say it clearly here that the National Assembly will do everything humanly possible to ensure that all forms of violence against women and girls are drastically reduced, if not completely eliminated, in the very near future.

“I want to also announce that the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, will play active roles in the next national action plan on violence against women that will be coming up very soon; we will send our representatives.

“We will also participate actively in ensuring that policies that will significantly reduce the incidence of violence of all kinds against women, against children, against girls are enacted,” he said.

The speaker said the House would participate actively in the 16-day activities to say that “enough is enough.”
