Human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned the killings and kidnappings in different parts of Nigeria, especially in Kwara, Niger, Benue, and Katsina States, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of utter failure in the fight against terrorism.

In a statement on Sunday, the organisation strongly condemned the deadly attacks in Tungar-Makeri, Konsoko, and Pissa villages of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, in which 32 innocent citizens were killed.

“The Nigerian authorities under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu had repeatedly claimed to be tackling the situation, but the mounting death toll tells a different story,” said the rights organisation on Sunday.

It added, “Alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom, and frequent killings across northern Nigeria have left people feeling more unsafe, showing utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and properties.”

Armed gunmen overran various communities in Kwara and several northern states, killing scores of residents, kidnapping several others, and setting properties ablaze.

“Dozens of motorcycles moved from one village to another, leaving behind dead bodies. The gunmen, who also burnt houses and shops, invaded these communities at 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. today and were on a killing spree up to 10:00 a.m. The exact number of people killed is yet to be ascertained, as more dead bodies are still being found in and around farms,” it explained.

The organisation expressed concern that, midway into February, over 239 people had so far been killed in various attacks in Kwara, Niger, Benue, and Katsina states. It challenged Mr Tinubu’s government to end the killings and abductions immediately.
