Rivers United crash out of CAF Champions League after 6-0 walloping in Morocco

Nigerian champions Rivers United have become the latest Nigerian clubside to crash out of the CAF competitions following a disastrous 6-0 defeat to Wydad Casablanca on Sunday night.
On Saturday, two Nigerian clubs Kwara United and Plateau United crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League respectively after failing to defend their victories from the first leg.
Having won the first leg 2-1 in Port Harcourt last week, Rivers United only needed a draw to proceed to the group stage of the CAF Champions League but were disgraced by the defending champions in Morocco.
Ayoub El Amloud opened the scoring for Wydad in the 32nd minute before Rivers United were reduced to ten men after goalkeeper Mutawakilu Seidu was sent off for a foul that resulted in a penalty.
Yahya Jabrane scored the penalty to double the hosts lead as the first half of the return leg of the second preliminary round fixture ended 2-0.
Bouly Sambou scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the second half to make it 4-nil before Jabrane got his brace of the night and Wydad’s fifth in the one-sided encounter.
Hamid Ahdad scored just minutes before the final whistle to seal the victory for the Moroccan side as Wydad proceeded to the group stage of the competition with an impressive 7-2 aggregate scoreline.
The Pride of Rivers will now proceed to the playoff of the CAF Confederation Cup for a chance to feature in the group stage of the second tier competition in this campaign.
The draw for the playoffs will be made tomorrow.
