Scavenger bags one-month jail term for stealing copper wires

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Wuse, Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced a 26-year-old scavenger, Ali Lawal, to a month imprisonment for stealing copper wires.
The Magistrate, Fareeda Ibrahim while delivering judgment, said that the sentence was to serve as deterrence to others.
He added that Lawal bagged one month imprisonment because it was his first time, warning him to desist from various crimes.
Earlier, the Prosecution counsel, Samuel Emmanuel, told the court that the complainant, Dahiru Abubakar of Automatic Car Wash, Garki in Abuja, had reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on Feb.28.
Mr Emmanuel said that Lawal was caught and arrested at the scene of the crime.
He stated that the offence contravened the provisions of section 287 of the Penal Code.
Lawal pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy, saying that he did not have an excuse why he stole the wires.
