Schoolchildren in UK to get £50 uniform subsidy

Schoolchildren in the metropolitan county of Merseyside in the United Kingdom are now eligible to receive a £50 uniform subsidy.
The council announced the development via its official Facebook page on Thursday.
The free school uniform scheme, considered a first-of-its-kind initiative, was part of the budget ratified by the local government authority, St Helens Borough Council.
Explaining the decision, St Helens Borough Council’s leader, Anthony Burns, stated that the initiative was possible because local authorities gained more surplus funds than expected from the central government.
“Because we’ve successfully lobbied the government for additional funding, our council is now in a stronger financial position and it was important that local residents saw the benefit of that,” Mr Burns said.
The council leader said the uniform subsidy scheme, which primary and secondary school pupils in the borough will enjoy, was modelled after Barnsley Council in Yorkshire, where a similar initiative was launched in 2025.
Describing the scheme as a cynical move, local council member and Reform Party representative, John Pinnington, questioned the scheme’s cost implication.
He claimed that the uniform subsidy was an idea by the Labour Party administration in the region to prevent itself from losing political seats in the forthcoming local elections.
In England, the high cost of branded school uniforms has been a subject of concern among parents in recent years.
A 2025 poll by a parenting charity platform, Parentkind, found that 47 per cent of the 2,000 participating parents expressed concern over uniform costs.
It noted that 29 per cent of the parents decried skipping meals to pay for their children’s uniforms.
