Security agencies not enabled to tackle insecurity: Lawan

“It is also important that we provide resources or more resources for our security agencies to enable them to gather to tackle the criminal activities going on across the country.”

President of the Nigerian Senate Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime has not adequately empowered security agencies to tackle insecurity in the country.

Mr Lawan who said this while speaking at an ongoing Special Summit on National Security in Abuja emphasised the need for the government to provide more resources for security agencies to adequately tackle insurgency currently marauding the country.

“It is also important that we provide resources or more resources for our security agencies to enable them to gather to tackle the criminal activities going on across the country, our armed forces can do that but the fact remains we have not enabled them enough. Today in this country there is no better investment than investing,” Mr Lawan said.

He further suggested that all criminals be dealt with regardless of their ethnic groups, a suggestion which comes amidst allegations that the Mr Buhari’s regime is shielding a particular ethnic group from facing the full wrath of the law following atrocities attributed to them.

Mr Lawan’s address coincides with the stand of Chairman of the senate committee on army, Senator Ali Ndume, who in March said that the Buhari government is not serious about addressing the security challenges currently bedevilling the country.

The Borno South senator who wants more troops recruited, said that having less than 800,000 security operatives including para-military for a population of more than 200 million people is too low.

Organised by the House of Representatives, the national security summit comes as bandits and Boko Haram continues to wreak havoc on communities in northern states and with unknown gunmen constantly attacking security and government facilities in the South-South and South-East region.
