The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) said its first-quarter dispute interventions saved maritime stakeholders more than N348.8 million across Nigeria’s port system.

Pius Akutah, the NSC executive secretary, disclosed this during an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.

“We received 32 complaints, resolved 19, closed one case, and retained 12 for further investigation.

“Our interventions helped users recover or avoid losses worth N348.81 million,” he said.

He said shipping companies and agents attracted 22 complaints, the highest number recorded during the quarter.

“Container deposit refunds led with five complaints, while arbitrary charges followed with four.

“Other cases involved demurrage, missing cargo, damaged goods, wrong discharge ports, and service failures,” he said.

Mr Akutah said shippers, exporters, importers and freight agents remained the main complainants, reflecting persistent port challenges.

“We will sustain fairness and strengthen competitiveness across West and Central Africa,” he pledged.
