On Saturday, a gas explosion rocked a market at Council Bus-Stop along Egbeda-Ikotun Road in Alimosho LGA of Lagos.

There was no casualty.

Traders and their customers scampered for safety as seven lock-up shops and several goods were said to have been razed by the inferno, along with some vehicles parked in a nearby mechanic workshop.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement on the agency’s X account, saying the emergency call was received around 2:00 p.m.

She stated that the fire was caused by leakage of a gas cylinder used at one of the shops, which spread to several other shops.

Ms Adeseye, however, revealed that the fire was now under control as efforts were ongoing to put out the remaining pockets of flames.

“Multiple agencies swiftly responded to the emergency, including Ejigbo and Isolo Fire Stations of @LagosRescue working in collaboration with LASEMA, LNSC and @NigerianPolice all actively engaged in managing the situation,” the statement said.

It added, “Preliminary investigations point to negligence during the refilling of a gas cylinder as the probable cause of the incident. Fortunately, there are no reported casualties.”
