An accident involving a Mistubishi canter and a Mazda bus, around the Lala/Kere area of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway has left six people dead, with 12 others sustaining injuries.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun.

Mr Umar said the accident occurred around 2:10 p.m. on Monday, with the likely cause being dangerous driving.

“A total of 38 people were involved in the accident which comprised 20 men, 13 women, three male children, and two female children.

“Twelve people were injured, eight men, three women, and one female child.

“A total of six deaths were recorded from the crash, comprising four men, one male child, and one female child,” he said.

Mr Umar added that the injured victims were taken to State Hospital, Abeokuta for medical attention, while the deceased were deposited in the hospital’s morgue.

Last year, the FRSC in Ogun identified incessant driving against traffic as a major challenge confronting its personnel on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

“There is the need for drivers to change their orientation about the use of road so that the highway could be safer for other motoring public,” the Itori Unit Commander, Shamaki Yerima, had said.

“Until drivers change their wrong way of using the roads, there will always be continuous negative effects which sometimes lead to loss of lives,” he noted.
