Mexican social media influencer César Gastélum has been shot dead during a livestream with two friends on TikTok.

Mr Gastélum, who has more than 500 million followers on TikTok, was streaming live outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán when the incident occurred on Tuesday.

He was shot at close range by one of two men on a motorcycle who approached them during the livestream.

The police initially thought the influencer was a delivery driver, as he and his friends were wearing bright yellow coats and bags used by riders, but they later identified him, local media reported.

The suspects fled the scene.

No arrest has been made as the police and forensic experts said they were examining cartridge casings and CCTV footage.

It’s unclear whether Mr Gastélum, known for uploading comedy videos, had received any threats prior to the incident.

Mr Gastélum’s killing is the latest of its kind in Mexico. On May 13, 2025, 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Márquez was shot and killed while livestreaming on TikTok at a salon in Zapopan. Another influencer, Leobardo “El Gordo Peruci” Aispuro, was shot and killed in Culiacán in December 2024.
