The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Sokoto State chapter has embarked on a grassroots awareness drive targeting youths to embrace true democracy for national growth.

The NDC gubernatorial aspirant in Sokoto state, Alhaji Shamsudeen Aliyu, unveiled the party’s stance on Sunday in Sokoto.

Mr Aliyu said the move was aimed at educating Nigerians, particularly young people, on the availability of viable political platforms beyond the dominant political parties.

“We focus on youth to be advocates of good governance, rallying support for NDC, for citizens to break free from a long-standing two-party cage. We used to live in a system where people believed there were only two options: the ruling party or the opposition. But Nigeria has more than 50 registered political parties. People deserve real choices,” he said.

Mr Aliyu further acknowledged that his group had previously aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but defended his decision to switch allegiance.

“Politics is about choice; when your ideology no longer aligns with a party’s direction, you have the right to move. Many politicians in Nigeria have done the same, even within the present political period,” he added.

The aspirant attributed his defection to the NDC to what he described as leadership concerns, emphasising that his new party better reflects his vision for governance and citizen participation.

He highlighted that their message focused on youth empowerment, warning against the manipulation of young people as political tools during elections.

“Our message is simple: be liberated,” he said. “Don’t allow yourselves to be used as political hooligans. Your vote is your power; use it to choose leaders that truly represent you,” Mr Aliyu said.

According to him, the campaign will reach across local government areas, contacts of youth groups and community-based associations.

The aspirant added that NDC would intensify efforts to position itself as a viable alternative ahead of future electoral cycles.

He expressed optimism that with political awareness and more young Nigerians demanding accountability, the push for broader participation and genuine choice may signal a shifting tide in the state’s political landscape.
