The Abakaliki Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered that a 35-year-old man, Monday Ikeagwu, be remanded in prison custody for threatening to kill his mother.
The police charged Mr Ikeagwu with threat to life and stealing N625,000 belonging to his mother, Jacinta.
The magistrate, Lillian Ogodo, did not take the plea of Mr Ikeagwu for want of jurisdiction.
Mr Ogodo said the case file and all exhibits should be forwarded to the department of public prosecution for legal advice.
Mr Ogodo adjourned the matter until March 29.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Chinagorom Eze, told the court that Mr Ikeagwu committed the offence of February 7 at Obodoma Ekka community, Ezza North LGA.
Mr Eze said Mr Ikeagwu threatened to kill his mother with a gun.
He said Mr Ikeagwu also stole N625,000 cash belonging to his mother.
The defence counsel, Solomon Eguji, asked the court to grant bail to his client.
Mr Eze, however, objected to the bail application.
“If bail is granted, he may disappear. I pray the court to discountenance the bail application,” he advised.
