South Korea urges Trump to ease tariffs on cars, steel
South Korean trade minister Yeo Han-koo, during a meeting with U.S. commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, called on President Donald Trump to slash tariffs on Korean cars, steel and other goods. The Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday, citing the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The ministry said Mr Yeo met with Mr Lutnick in Washington, DC, earlier on Monday to address a range of trade issues, including tariffs and industrial collaboration.
During the talks, Mr Yeo emphasised Seoul’s commitment to strengthening manufacturing ties with the U.S.
He urged the Trump administration to give “favourable treatment” to Korean companies facing tariffs on cars, steel and other products.
On July 5, Mr Yeo held talks with U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer to propose a mutually beneficial cooperation framework.
Mr Trump would unveil a 25 per cent tariff on imports from South Korea and Japan starting from August 1.
South Korea has three weeks to negotiate exemptions or reductions on tariffs and duties, aiming for a broad deal on trade and industrial cooperation.
