South-West Houses of Assembly’s harmonised rules gained relevance: Lawmaker

The majority leaders in Houses of Assembly in the six South-West states said the harmonised rules adopted by the different assemblies had gained relevance to be adopted by other geo-political zones.
Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, the newly-elected chairman of the South-West Legislative Reform Implementation Committee (SLRC), speaking for the majority leaders on Saturday in Akure, explained that the assemblies in the zone had harmonised the legislative rules, which had caught the attention of other zones for emulation.
He promised to work assiduously to ensure legislative works were fashioned to meet the people’s yearnings.
According to him, lawmakers from foreign countries should be coming to the zone to learn from plenary sessions of its legislative houses.
“The 9th SLRC has done its best together with its entire members.
“But now, during my time, I have to look for ways to improve in all areas; at least, if we can travel abroad from Nigeria to observe their plenary sessions, nothing should stop them from coming here.
“And as far as South-West is concerned, the harmonised rules that we are using at the moment are what we took to the nation, and I believe that they are going to be what all Houses of Assembly will use,” he said.
He appreciated the former chairman, the majority leader of the Lagos House of Assembly, and others.
Earlier, the former chairman of SLRC, Oyeniran Agunbiade, said the forum had achieved great success in its mandate.
“The forum is striving to ensure that all legislators in the South-West come together to know ourselves better, to interact and know the areas of interest that will benefit individuals, as well as create harmonious relationships among all the houses in the South-West,” he stated.
According to him, SLRC has done cross-learning programmes in some critical areas of oversights and budgeting.
He stated that the forum ensured that the houses followed the procedure outlined in their rules.
“We went around the state to attend plenary and see how the rules are being used. We have been able to encourage all other zones in the country to harmonise their rules.
“We are in the process of making sure that there is a database for all legislators in the South-West,” he stated.
The speaker of the Ondo House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, who declared the meeting open, thanked the forum for the successful inauguration of new executive members under the leadership of Mr Ogunmolasuyi.
Mr Oladiji, represented by Abayomi Akinruntan, the deputy speaker of the state assembly, asked the committee to ensure that a platform be created for effective service delivery regarding oversight functions to enhance legislative compliance among South-West assemblies.
