Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has shattered the record for the highest-grossing Hollywood film at the West African box office, grossing N1.8 billion.

FilmOne Entertainment, West Africa’s largest distributor of major international films, announced the new record, describing the superhero movie as the number-one film of the weekend and the highest-grossing Hollywood film of all time in the region.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day is officially the highest-grossing Hollywood film of all time in West Africa, and what a run it has been.

“Records broken. History made. And none of it happens without everyone who bought a ticket, showed up, brought their people and experienced Spidey on the big screen. Thank you, West Africa!” the distributor said.

In the film’s opening weekend, the film grossed N700.5 million, making it the biggest opening for a superhero film and the biggest weekend in the Spider-Man franchise in West Africa.

Before its nationwide theatre release, the film recorded the biggest-ever advance ticket sales, with 3,500 tickets sold.

On its opening day, the film grossed N201 million, while its preview screenings generated N120 million at the West African box office.
