SSANU, NASU to begin nationwide strike

Non academic staff members of Nigerian public universities are demanding better conditions of service.

• January 23, 2021

The Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) would embark on an indefinite nationwide strike, from February 5, Peter Adeyemi said on Friday.

Mr. Adeyemi, a spokesman to the joint action committee of SSANU and NASU said the action was over the federal government’s failure to implement the agreement between both parties.

Peoples Gazette in October 2020, reported that both unions are demanding payment of national minimum wage, removal from government integrated payroll system, IPPIS, among others.

Mr. Adeyemi said the unions in a memorandum of understanding in October 2020, requested that the federal government resolve the compliance of SSANU/NASU with respect to IPPIS, and should be corrected within two weeks.

But, three months after, the government is yet to correct the abnormalities, the Gazette learnt.

Mr. Adeyemi stresses that the failure of the government to resolve issues surrounding the IPPIS has led to high levels of restiveness among members who have been short-changed on account of the problem by IPPIS

“Two weeks’ notice effective from today, Friday, January 22, 2021, is hereby given to the government and relevant stakeholders of this development”, Mr. Adeyemi said.

ASUU, Nigeria’ university lecturers union just returned from a nine-month long drawn out negotiations with federal authorities, causing great disruption in the academic calendar of public universities.
