American veteran actress and television star Loretta Swit, best known for her iconic role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the classic series ‘MASH,’ passed away on Friday.

She was aged 87.

The actress died peacefully at her home in New York as confirmed by her publicist, Harlan Boll.

The late Swit was born in Passaic, New Jersey on November 4, 1937. She trained in the theatre before transitioning to television. Her big break into ”tha showbiz” came when she was cast in ”MASH,” a role that defined her career.

Her portrayal in MASH spanned 11 seasons as a strong-willed Army nurse which started airing from 1972. She also starred in several notable television films such as “Games Mother Never Taught You,’’ “Hell Hath No Fury,’’ “The Execution, “Dreams of Gold’’ and “A Killer Among Friends.’’ Her talent extended to the stage as well. She made her Broadway debut in 1975 with “Same Time,’’ “Next Year,’’ and went on to become one of the most beloved series in TV stars of history. It features a mix of comedy, war-time drama, and compassionate storytelling.

Beyond her role in “MASH,” Swit appeared in several TV movies, theatrical productions, and guest roles, though she turned down many high-profile opportunities to stay committed to the series. She originated the role of Detective Christine Cagney in the “Cagney & Lacey pilot,’’ but contractual obligations to “MASH’’ forced her to step aside as the show moved forward.

The actress won two Primetime Emmy Awards (1980 and 1982) for her performance and was nominated 10 times overall for her portrayal of Major Houlihan.

Off-screen, Loretta Swit was just as passionate. A lifelong advocate for animal rights, she founded the SwitHeart Animal Alliance in 2016 and devoted her later years to rescue and welfare campaigns. Her activism earned her the Betty White Award in 2017, recognising her commitment to animal advocacy.

The late Swit was previously married to actor Dennis Holahan from 1983 to 1995. She had no children but left behind a vast community of fans, fellow actors, and activists who admired her talent and heart.
