The Chairman of the House Committee on Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), Bashiru Dawodu, has urged Nigerians to desist from all manner of discrimination against people with disabilities.

Mr Dawodu stated this during the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a group of PWDs in Abuja on Tuesday.

The lawmaker, who advocated unfettered inclusion of persons with disabilities in social activities, including politics, said there was an ongoing amendment of the PWD Act.

“The law prescribes no discrimination against PWDs. It prescribes that five per cent of them should constitute the employees in any employment process,” he said.

Mr Dawodu expressed his committee’s willingness to ensure provision of a tax rebate for PWDs to guarantee their social protection.

Also speaking, spokesman for the PWDs, Valentine Ugochukwu, thanked the committee for prioritising their welfare.

According to Mr Ugochukwu, PWDs have the potential to rise above pity or social vulnerability.

He reeled out various projects and programmes by the PWDs to address some of the challenges facing the members.
