President Bola Tinubu’s government has stated that its economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange reforms and fiscal restructuring, have long-term benefits to all Nigerians. 

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this while receiving an award on Friday in Lagos.

“As we navigate major policy shifts—including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange reforms, and fiscal restructuring—our approach has centered on clarity, consistency, and credibility. We are committed to ensuring that government decisions are communicated with empathy and responsibility, always highlighting their long-term benefits for all Nigerians,” said Mr Idris.

The minister stated that fostering open dialogue is indispensable to bridge the gap between governance and public perception.

He added, “This award is a testament to the trust we strive to build with every Nigerian. Communication is at the heart of governance, and it must foster confidence, unity, and hope.”

The removal of subsidy and other economic reforms have resulted into untold hardship for Nigerians. However, Mr Tinubu insisted the reforms were necessary to reposition the country for sustainable growth.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Friday, questioned the federal government’s continued reliance on borrowing despite proceeds from the petrol subsidy removal.

Mr Sanusi stated that the potential benefits of subsidy removal and exchange rate liberalisation are being threatened by fiscal indiscipline. 

“We’ve removed the subsidy. We’re now spending it. What we should not see is fiscal consolidation. You cannot remove wastages and continue borrowing. I’ve said this before. You need to see the benefits,” the monarch said.
