Cholera cases in Sudan have slightly declined in recent weeks following increased humanitarian efforts to contain the outbreak, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

In a statement on Tuesday, the UN agency said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had prepositioned 60 metric tonnes of cholera supplies across Sudan, enough to support the treatment of about 120,000 cases.

The outbreak, which began in May in Al Nuhud locality of West Kordofan, has spread to 20 localities across six states, with nearly 3,000 cases and about 250 associated deaths reported, according to OCHA.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation announced a nationwide livestock vaccination campaign to protect 9.8 million animals and safeguard the livelihoods of 1.2 million households that own livestock. 

The UN said humanitarian organisations were continuing to assist in ongoing armed clashes and drone attacks across the country.

In El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, humanitarian partners report that at least two displaced people were killed and seven others were injured in a series of drone attacks on Friday.

Drone attacks and armed clashes were also reported in Tanna, Al Kokiti, Al Jamama, Bara, Soudari and Al Mazroub between Wednesday and Saturday.

OCHA called for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure and urged rapid and flexible funding to enable humanitarian organisations to respond to growing needs across Sudan.
