The Sudanese government has called on the international community to prioritise ending the violent crisis in Sudan to ensure sustainable peace in the Sahel region.

Charge d’ Affaires of the Sudan Embassy in Nigeria, Ahmed Taboul, who spoke with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, decried attacks by the Rapid Support Forces against civilians in villages and towns in eastern Aj Jazirah and the Al-Butana region of Sudan.

The envoy also stated that the silence by the international community on attacks that resulted in the killing of not less than 260 civilians should not be encouraged.

Mr Taboul said, “What we need from the international community and organisation is to support the Sudanese people and, clearly, the legitimate government of Sudan. To declare the militia RSF as terrorist, because what has been done was not only by militia members from Sudan; they used thousands of mercenaries from different parts of the Sahel. It was documented and given by the UN Security Council that the Sudanese Armed Forces now have thousands of these mercenaries from Chad, Mali, Niger, Libya, Yemen and the UAE. This crisis is no longer an internal issue or Sudanese issue; it has become a regional and international issue. That is why the international community should take this seriously. Without safety in Sudan, there will be no safety across the region with open borders that can affect regional security. Therefore, the call on the international community for strong measures against supporting the militia.”

He reiterated that Sudan is committed to providing humanitarian access to affected civilians across various parts of the country.

These, according to him, are areas RSF is present within the framework of the state policy, saying Sudan is committed to working closely with the UN and other humanitarian organisations to achieve set goals.

He added, “In this regard, all the embassies of the government of Sudan are providing visas for the humanitarian moves. Here in Nigeria, we are issuing visas for humanitarian purposes to personnel from the UN and other organisations.’’

He further stated that the Sudanese government will continue to prioritise humanitarian solutions amidst the conflict situation in the country.
