Suicide Prevention Day: NOA raises awareness

The National Orientation Agency, on Wednesday, raised awareness about suicidal behaviors among Nigerians.
The NOA director in Jigawa, Ahmad Tijjani, in his message to commemorate the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day in Dutse, stressed the need to raise awareness on suicide and break the stigma.
WSPD, commemorated annually on September 10, aims to raise public awareness about suicidal behaviours, providing worldwide commitment and action, and highlighting the need to address mental health issues and reduce stigma.
Tijjani noted that the agency joined the rest of the world to raise awareness, break the stigma, and remind Nigerians that suicide was preventable.
He explained that every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide, with each loss deeply affecting families and communities.
“Suicide is preventable, and together we can change the narrative, break harmful myths and stigma. Therefore, let us encourage open and compassionate dialogue. We should check in on family, friends, and neighbors; sometimes a simple question can save a life,” he said.
The director also urged people to listen with patience and without judgment, while encouraging those struggling to seek professional help from doctors, counselors, or hotlines, and to share information on where support can be found.
“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope. Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters,” he added.
