SWAN gets caretaker committee in Abia

The National leadership of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has appointed a three-man caretaker committee to spearhead its Abia State chapter for a period of three months.
The committee Secretary, Bethel Kalu, made this known to journalists in Aba on Sunday.
Mr Kalu quoted the SWAN Secretary-General, Ikenna Okonkwo, as saying in an official letter sent to the chapter named the appointees as Chairman, Kingsley Okwum, Bethel Kalu as secretary and Chigozie Nwosu as member.
He said that the committee was constituted following the expiration of the grace period given to the state chapters to conduct elections.
“Due to the failure, SWAN national leadership was compelled to take steps in line with extant laws to protect the association in such chapters. Sequel to a careful evaluation of events in the Abia State chapter of the association, the national decided to set up a caretaker committee to handle the affairs of its members in the state. The action is in pursuant to relevant sections of the SWAN Statute which gives room for a caretaker committee to fill the vacuum,” the letter quoted Mr Okonkwo as saying.
The caretaker committee is expected to pilot the affairs of the chapter for three months, within which it is expected to conduct election for new executive members
The appointment takes effect from Thursday, September 11 and renders the former executive led by Vincent Obike, null and void.
Obike and other executives were directed to immediately hand over all property of the association in its possession to the caretaker committee.
The national SWAN urged members of the committee to bring their wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of their service to the association and humanity.
